Yes, chiropractic
is among the safest forms of healing and health care interventions. It is a low risk, drug-free, and non-surgical approach to decrease
pain and improve overall function.
Chiropractors
need a minimum of 7 years of training to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic designation. Many chiropractors choose to continue
their learning by specializing in chiropractic neurology, radiology, sports rehabilitation,
and pediatric and pre-natal care.
An
adjustment is the art of delivering a specific force in a
precise direction that helps normalize the function of the
spine. This can be done by hand or with a specially designed instrument. After years of training, each chiropractor
has selected a variety of methods and has become skilled in their delivery.
What
causes that "cracking" sound during an adjustment?
Not all techniques produce that cracking or popping sound. When it does occur, it is from the release of a nitrogen gas bubble filling the partial vacuum created when the joints are re-aligned.
Feeling
the need to crack your neck or back is caused by tension from
fixated vertebrae, which causes another part of the spine to compensate
by moving too much and make that popping sound. The fixated part of the
spine should be adjusted by a chiropractor to balance the rest of the spine.
You
may have a misalignment in your spine for a long time before
any symptoms appear. It is possible for you to know you have one, but rarely
is it possible to know that you do not. That is why periodic check ups are a great
idea even when you have no pain.
Can
I see a chiropractor without a referral from my medical doctor?
Yes,
chiropractors are primary health care givers, just like general
practitioners. We have the ability to diagnose and treat our
patients within the scope of chiropractic or make a recommendation
to refer to another health care provider.
